The September exhibit in the Pratt Community College Delmar Riney Art Gallery features the works of Sheri Lauren Schmidt of Marion, Kan. Schmidt’s work encompasses acrylic, watercolor, digital photography, pen, pencil, pastels in a unique combination of both large canvases and murals to small-scale illustrations. The collection on display is modeled after a previous exhibition called Whimsy and Wise, which juxtaposed works of playful lights with serious darks.
“I try to keep myself centered and focused in what I’m trying to express, whether it be silly or something more grim,” said Schmidt of her art. “In some ways it’s easier to focus in on the darker pieces of art, because it can be easier to access those emotions of anger or hopelessness. It’s harder to make yourself feel happy emotions and channel that in a direct manner.”

Artist Sheri Lauren Schmidt from Marion donated a watercolor painting, “Autumn Harvest,” for a silent auction that will benefit the Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts in Newton.
The silent auction began at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4. Bidding will close at Tanya Tandoc’s “Cooking for the Arts” program at 6 p.m. Friday, May 10 at the Senior Center, 122 E. 6th, Newton.
Tandoc will demonstrate recipes for her famous specialty soups. including Tomato Basil Bisque, Chicken Curry with Chutney, Shrimp and Corn Chowder and Cuban Black Bean.
Tickets to the event are $45 and attendance at this event is limited to the first 60 guests.
Proceeds from the silent auction and the Cooking for the Arts fundraiser will help BCAPA to continue its mission of enhancing the quality of life in Newton and the surrounding communities through the fine arts.
“Autumn Harvest” is on display at BCAPA, 123 E. Broadway, Newton.
